jason burns makes r+b electronica trapstep uk funky emo house

This guy Jason Burns has been putting out a lot of really dope laid-back electronica this past year. Some of it sounds post-dubstep or trap influenced, some of his other work sounds more housey or uk funky style. Pretty much all my favorite tracks by him have some sped-up, chopped up singer vocals at the center of emotional tracks characterized by soft, atmospheric melodies. His mixes are top-notch and an excellent representation of the level of detail in his work. This one and this one here get steady play in my car. Now it looks like dude is working closely with Kastle, an electronic producer with very similar vibez. His last EP was released on Kastle’s Symbols label. Check out some of my favorite Jason Burns tracks below.

track of the week: dubbel dutch – throwback

Posted in fresh with tags , , , on 10/02/2011 by djjeffresh

Dubbel Dutch is a DJ based out of Austin. He put out this track a while back but it is still so good, the chopped up r+b vocals get stuck in my head all the time. This track has a uk funky and garage vibe to it with some retro electro thrown in there.

I just finished my new mix for this summer. Lots of dubstep and moombahton with some UK funky, New Orleans bounce, some dancey stuff, some weird stuff, all tracks that I am feeling right now mixed together live into an 80-minute dj set. Download the standard version here, the one-really-long-track version here. You can also stream it from my soundcloud page here. Tracklist after the jump.

dj orion, dubbel dutch (and probably kingdom) tomorrow at beauty bar

So I’m starting to get really into this whole dark r+b, grime, house, dubstep, uk underground, uk funky, garage type stuff that is largely influenced by UK artists and labels the past few years. I don’t know a ton about the scene, but I do know that there are certain artists that I am getting really excited about. One of them is Kingdom, who is probably the special guest referenced in the flier above. I figured this out because I am really smart and also because I know he is signed to the UK label Night Slugs and NYC label Fool’s Gold and just started his own label called Fade to Mind. Oh yeah, also local dj Orion blew the “secret” today on his twitter. Either way I’m super stoked about it because of super fresh songs I just discovered like this and this and this. Check out this cool Scion A/V interview with Kingdom here. The show appears to be free at Beauty Bar tomorrow, so that’s cool. Dubbel Dutch is another housey grimey dubsteppey type who actually lives in Austin now. I don’t know much about him, but I’ll be sure to catch his set tomorrow as well. See you there!

best of sxsw 2011: brenmar

Posted in fresh with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 05/30/2011 by djjeffresh

SXSW this year was the first time DJ/Producer Brenmar popped up on my radar. He did several appearances around town but what initially caught my eye was his set at the Fader Fort. His remixes and original productions tend to heavily invoke pop R+B sounds whether it’s acapellas from the 90s (Shai, Aaliyah, Groove Theory) or stuff from more recent sangers (Cassie, Rihanna, Jamie Foxx). With ghetto house influences from his native Chicago and the complex percussion aesthetics of UK Funky, his stuff is dancey, dark and always left-of-center. This guy is really talented and is just starting to tap into his potential. Last month he released a weird barbershop music video to promote his debut EP At It Again. Brenmar is set up in NYC which explains why that video feels so Brooklyn and also why he is starting to get more press coverage. To get a better feel for his tastes, I recommend his XLR8R and Fader mixes and this cool track called Paper Running. Also check out his soundcloud page. Jeah.
