3ball mty coming to austin, san antonio

The picture above captures the essence of the tribal (aka 3ball) movement in Mexico: a mix of traditional cumbia and Caribbean influences with futuristic electro house beats. Although its deepest roots are in Monterrey and Mexico City, the genre has been gaining worldwide attention the past two years, thanks largely to Toy Selectah, XLR8R and Mad Decent exposure. Like many people, I was first exposed to tribal culture in a VICE video about las botas picudas (or Mexican pointy boots) pictured here:

The musical theme in that video is a song by the best known producer and dj in the tribal movement, DJ Erick Rincon. Here are a couple of my favorite tracks by him along with a Discobelle mix of his tribal influences. Rincon, 18, linked up with a couple other tribal djs, DJ Otto and Sheeqo Beat, who are 19 and 20 respectively. Collectively the trio make up 3ball MTY, a formidable super group of young Mexican djs and producers. They recently released the first ever tribal music video for Inténtalo (Me Prende) and already garnered over 1.5 million YouTube hits. 3ball MTY are on tour now and stop through in San Antonio and Austin October 7th and 8th. No location or ticket info yet, just this twitter announcement. A bailar!

Dynamic DJ duo PANTyRAID who I blogged about earlier this year are coming to the Texas Music Theater in San Marcos tomorrow. It’s a back-to-school type scene for the Texas State dubstep and glitch hop fans. Click here to check out some of their best long mixes. Also you can get ready by listening to this and this and this particularly cool native-sounding track. Check the flier for event info:

I profiled this fella Dillon Francis earlier this year after his SXSW performance. Since then his profile has continued to rise with a cross-eyed music video, new productions and continued world touring. Tomorrow he will likely drop a moombahton-centric dj set at Beauty Bar–the perfect soundtrack/setting for a sweaty, sultry summer night. See you there? Here are a few new DF tracks making the internet rounds.

dj orion, dubbel dutch (and probably kingdom) tomorrow at beauty bar

So I’m starting to get really into this whole dark r+b, grime, house, dubstep, uk underground, uk funky, garage type stuff that is largely influenced by UK artists and labels the past few years. I don’t know a ton about the scene, but I do know that there are certain artists that I am getting really excited about. One of them is Kingdom, who is probably the special guest referenced in the flier above. I figured this out because I am really smart and also because I know he is signed to the UK label Night Slugs and NYC label Fool’s Gold and just started his own label called Fade to Mind. Oh yeah, also local dj Orion blew the “secret” today on his twitter. Either way I’m super stoked about it because of super fresh songs I just discovered like this and this and this. Check out this cool Scion A/V interview with Kingdom here. The show appears to be free at Beauty Bar tomorrow, so that’s cool. Dubbel Dutch is another housey grimey dubsteppey type who actually lives in Austin now. I don’t know much about him, but I’ll be sure to catch his set tomorrow as well. See you there!

the glitch mob at la zona roza tonight

The Glitch Mob are part of the LA electronic music scene that puts a darker twist on traditional dance music. With dubsteppy sounds and glitchy production techniques, these guys put out tracks that sound like nothing else out there. Should be an awesome show at an awesome venue tonight: La Zona Roza. Get tickets here and check out some of my favorite Glitch Mob tracks below.
